All of us are proud that Marena has been a dependable source for scientifically-developed, comfortable medical compression garments and trusted advice since 1994.
During our beginning in the early 1990’s, I (Bill) and my precious wife, Vera, were simply dreaming that owning our own business might be a better way to provide for the needs of our then young and growing family. We named the business after our children -- Mark (MAR) and Lena (ENA) – because we really thought this career move would be a better way in which to provide for and raise them.
Our business was started in our Atlanta, Georgia home but at that time, we never dreamed of becoming manufacturers. Instead, we tried for more than a year to simply partner with an existing company and export products that were already on the North American market. For a number of important reasons, it soon became apparent that this strategy was not going to serve our potential customers well.
So, during early 1995, Vera designed and sewed our first garments in our garage using three used sewing machines we bought on our maxed out credit card. By the end of the summer Vera was ready so in October 1995, I (Bill) traveled to the next available trade show (located in Guatemala) and I sold our first products to plastic surgeons and a medical products distributor. To say the least, we were thrilled!
Since this tiny beginning, our Company has profitably grown each and every year at a double-digit rate thanks to the confidence our customers around the world have shown in us. Starting as a husband-wife operation, we are now one of the most advanced sewing factories in North America and a leading niche apparel manufacturer serving several specialties.
We are truly grateful to our customers and acknowledge that anything we have become has been because of them.
We initially focused on exporting our products. Until 1998, 95% of our revenue was generated in markets outside the USA. Today, international shipments equal domestic USA shipments. Both domestic and international markets have continued to grow (honestly, although some better than others!) and our products are now sold in a total of 55 countries in several continents including North America, Latin and South America, Europe, and Asia/Pacific Rim.
Our roots started with designing our own medical-grade fabric rather than using the same standard fabrics shared by all other competitors around the world. We thought that patients deserved a better wearing environment than what was then available from global textile manufacturers since they wear their garments every hour of every day for weeks at a time. For this breakthrough fabric we were awarded the first of five U.S. and international patents in 1998. We have continued our developments of new innovations and technologies and, most recently in 2005, we were the first to provide an anti-microbial fabric to our customers. Today, our experts can be found around the world speaking to professional groups about our textile technology and sharing our compression garment knowledge base.
In 2001, we were recognized as the SBA Southeast Region Small Business Exporter of the Year based on the SBA’s evaluation not only of our export successes but also our overall business strategies and results.
For outstanding business performance improvements and productivity gains through the use of the Infor VISUAL Enterprise product suite, The Business Performance award, was awarded to The Marena Group in 2005.
In 2006, Apparel Magazine, the leading B2B (trade) publication for apparel manufacturers and retailers chose Marena as its Grand All Star of 2006.
